The Craftsman of Christmas: Willow Tree and Fontanini Nativity Sets
05-27-2020
Over the years, Nativity sets have become more and more varied and interesting. People now have more opportunities to choose layouts and figures that “fit” with their decor. From simple to ornate, from minimalist to traditionalist - there is something out there for everyone. And with the volume of figures, stables, and stars, people are free to create and re-create in many different directions.
Two of the most well-known craftsmen of Christmas, i.e. designers and producers of Nativity sets, are Willow Tree nativity set (Demdaco) and Fontanini nativity set (Roman). Read on for a few details about these famous “lines” of Nativity sets.
Fontanini Nativity sets are considered heirloom and collectible; they are hand-crafted in Italy. Most people recognize Fontanini nativity sets by the life-like sculpting, level of detail, and the rich/intense colors of the hand-painted sets. The Fontanini family has been crafting Nativity sets (among many other things) for four generations in Tuscany. The founding father, Emanuele Fontanini, was a skilled artist whose work continues to inspire his descendents. While the current Fontaninis are not artists themselves, they continue to work with some of the most skilled artists and designers, while also modernizing the company in the 21st century. Fontanini offers figures and structures in various sizes to suit any home or budget.
Whereas Fontanini nativity set screams “richness,” Willow Tree nativity set shouts, “ethereal.” Yet both have notable artist roots. Each of Willow Trees original figures are sculpted by the renowned artist Susan Lordi. Willow Tree nativity set designs are intended to be simple to allow people to draw their own feelings and conclusions about the figure or scene. Lordi brings a natural feeling to her Willow Tree Nativity stables and figures. The whitewashed colors and rustic accents are truly distinctive, yet very simple and calming. The Willow Tree Nativity stable is very representative of the overall style - clean lines, a columnar shape, a muted color palette, and the simplest metal star (the Christmas star).
Perhaps you are more drawn to the intricacies and complexity of the Fontanini nativity set animals and angels. Or you might prefer the serene Willow Tree Nativity stable and adoring Mary statue.
