Preparing for First Communion

08-22-2019

First Communion is an important step in a child’s faith life. It marks the first time a child receives the body of Christ (often between the ages of 7-9). The preparation for First Communion is as important as the sacrament itself. It is a time during which children learn about Church doctrine, recite new prayers, and participate in specialized classes and retreats. They are encouraged to explore their growing independence and reflect on their relationship with God in new ways. It is truly an exciting time, yet not without it challenges.

Many families look for ways in which they can participate in the preparation for First Communion; parents want to support during challenges and celebrate new learning. This is wonderful; after all, it isn’t only your child’s parochial school or church who should be involved in this endeavor. It is a time for mom, dad, and (age appropriate) siblings to grow together in their family faith and bonds.

Here are a few ideas for First Communion preparation:

Perhaps your child’s school or church provides assignments to the child during First Communion preparation. Sit down with your son or daughter and show interest. Ask questions about the assignment and use its content as a launching point for further conversation. This is a great option for families who feel they may not have time or expertise because helping with assignments only requires you to build and supplement what other preparation is going on.

Create a First Communion banner! Some schools or CCD classes will ask each child to create a First Communion banner. They may be displayed somewhere in church (it is very common to see them on pews during the sacramental mass) or school. First Communion banners often include representations of the Eucharist and the child’s name. First Communion banner kits are inexpensive and make this project a breeze!

Consider other First Communion crafts. If First Communion banners aren’t interesting to you, other crafty options abound. You can make your own First Communion bookmark (perfect for child’s first Bible) or make it even simpler and just purchase a pre-made First Communion activity book. Even though these may not be as intricate as a First Communion banner, they still provide a fun way to talk through important elements of the sacrament. If your child is artsy, this is surefire way to create understanding of and excitement for First Communion.

Read a book. If your child is not necessarily crafty, snuggling up for a good read with a book about First Communion is another easy way to involve yourself in the preparation processes. As with any other book, they spark questions and create conversation. Even if the book is not about First Communion specifically, anything that empowers a child with more knowledge of their religion and faith definitely qualifies as preparatory!

This is an exciting time for you and your child. It is too easy to focus on the day itself and miss all the opportunities for bonding, growth, and learning in the weeks and months leading up to First Communion. Whether you choose a craft like a First Communion banner or a chapter book about Catholic saints, use those activities as a time to pause and appreciate your child and church!
