St. Augustine of Hippo was originally from North Africa, Algeria in modern terms, which was a Roman Province. His mother was Christian, and his father was a pagan until his deathbed when he converted to Christianity. Highly educated, Augustine studied in Carthage and became a teacher of rhetoric in 375 for nine years before moving to Rome. In Rome, he was awarded a post in the imperial court in Milan which was a very visible position. Augustine met Ambrose, the Bishop of Milan, and their relationship made Augustine re-evaluate his relationship with Christianity. Augustine was baptized by Ambrose on Easter in 387 and ordained a priest in Hippo; later he became the Bishop of Hippo. There are 500 of his thousands of sermons given that are still available today. He is named a Doctor of the Church due to his doctrines on original sin, divine grace, and virtue. St. Augustine is the patron saint of brewers and theologians.
