The book is edited by Kathleen Deignon who focuses on what she feels is a neglected theme of his writing: the natural world as manifestation of the divine. In the book Deignon has thematically assembled a collection from Merton's extensive writings on nature for use in reflection and meditation.

The chapters in When the Trees Say Nothing include topics such as the 4 elements, the seasons, Earth and it's creatures, the sun, moon and stars and include brief passages from the works of Merton about these topics that reveal the presence of God in creation. Drawings by John Giuliani illustrate some of the passages and contribute to the beauty of the book. The writings of Thomas Merton are read and admired worldwide. When the Trees Say Nothing gives the reader some of his most beautiful efforts and gives the reader a lovely and serene way to pray and meditate and to find God all around them in the beautiful creation as pointed out by Merton.
