Both are in recovery so the reflections are based on their own personal experiences. They talk of how Twelve Step programs often occur in basements of churches where hospitality is offered and stories are shared with others who are supportive as they are all in the same place and since "through sharing coffee and conversation real recovery begins". This is much like when the early disciples went out into communities and the gospel was shared and bread broken.
The reflections are loosely based upon the liturgical calendar of the Church. The authors question what would happen if this deep spiritual sharing was moved up and experienced in the main body of the Church. The encouragement and hope offered in not just for those in recovery but for anyone who is drifting, feeling alienated or feeling estranged from the world around them.
