St. John the Evangelist

St. Patrick's Guild carries a St. John the Evangelist statue, a St. John the Evangelist medal and a St. John the Evangelist holy card which all can be given as gifts in honor of this venerated saint. St. John the Apostle and Evangelist was one of the original 12 Apostles and is thought to be the author of the Gospel of John and, possibly, the Book of Revelation. St. John was said to be loved by Jesus above the other apostles. He was the one in whom Jesus entrusted the care of his mother Mary, the only one who did not abandon Jesus during his Passion, the first to reach the opened tomb and the first to recognize the risen Jesus when he appeared at the Lake of Tiberias. He was considered to be a pillar of the Church in Jerusalem after the death of Jesus.

St. John is often shown with an eagle, one of the symbols envisioned in the book of Revelation which John is believed to have written. He is the only Apostle thought to have lived to an old age and not martyred for his faith. The St. John the Evangelist statue, St. John the Evangelist medal or St. John the Evangelist holy card would be an appropriate gift to give to anyone named John but especially to the young man who has chosen John as his Confirmation name. St. John is the patron saint of friendship, writers and burn victims.
