St. James

Saint James, also known as Saint James the Greater, was one of the original 12 Apostles called by Jesus. He and his brother John, together called "Sons of Thunder", were the sons of Zebedee and reported to be quite ambitious. St. James was one of the three Apostles chosen to be present at the transfiguration of Jesus, the raising of the daughter of Jairus and at the agony in the garden of Gethsemane. The death of St. James is the only one reported in the Christian Scriptures so he is considered to be the first Apostle martyred. Saint James is the patron saint of arthritis, rheumatism, laborers, veterinarians, blacksmiths, Chile, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and, especially, Spain. A St James statue, a St. James medal or a St. James cross would be a fine spiritual gift to give to anyone who is named James, who takes James as his Confirmation saint name or who works in any of the areas for which St. James is a patron.
