The ancient origins of the Saint Benedict crucifix date back to the mid-1600's in Bavaria. Today, the crucifix is still used as a strong support against temptation for many of the faithful. What makes the Saint Benedict crucifix unique is that the saint's specifically designed medal is in the center of the cross. The front shows the medal's cross with letters representing the prayer of Jesus while being tempted in the desert: 'Be gone Satan! Never tempt me with your vanities! What you offer me is evil! Drink the poison yourself!' The reverse side shows him and the letters representing his Latin prayer. Translated, they mean: 'May the Holy cross be my light! May the dragon never be my guide!'
The 1-3/8 inch, silver Saint Benedict crucifix comes on an approximately 24 inch black nylon cord that may vary in thickness between different crucifixes.
