Author Richard Furey takes the reader along the Stations of the Cross as if seeing it all happen through the eyes of Mary. Each Station describes what is happening to Jesus as Mary walks with him and sees his suffering. At the end of each beginning reading, a meditation is offered that asks us to look at and see how we add to the pain of carrying the cross when we do actions that lead to sin.
The Ninth Station of "Mary's Way of the Cross" starts out "This fall of Jesus was agony to me. Not only had he fallen on rocky ground again, but now he was almost at the top of the hill of crucifixion". The meditation talks of times when the reader deserted someone who needed help, especially when giving that help would be an inconvenience for or painful to the reader. Stunning black and white images for each station also bring the reader closer into what is happening. "Mary's Way of the Cross" is a new and painful, though ultimately hopeful, way of looking at the death and Resurrection of Jesus as experienced by Mary as she became the first person to walk "the way of the Cross".
