The First Spiritual Exercises presents four guided retreats as originally conceived by St. Ignatius Loyola. The retreats can be done on an individual level within the structure of ordinary life and without a spiritual leader. The First Spiritual Exercises as envisioned by St. Ignatius are set up to be done in a shorter time than the Full Spiritual Exercises so each of the retreats in The First Spiritual Exercises lasts 4 weeks. The retreats are designed to help the reader experience or learn to experience inner peace within four areas: Inner Peace in Divine Love, in Darkness and Light, in Friendship with Jesus and in the Service of God.
Each retreat has a guide for daily prayer Monday through Thursday, Sunday Eucharist and a weekend exercise all to encourage the person going through the retreat to find inner peace as a way to go through life. Guides and helps are presented in the second half of the book to help the retreats be as meaningful to the reader as they can be. The First Spiritual Exercises is recommended if you are looking to develop your prayer life in the Ignatian tradition.
