Product DescriptionThe Cloud of Unknowing was written by an unknown 14th century mystic offering a practical guide to the life of contemplation. The author feels that our ordinary thoughts must be buried beneath a "cloud of forgetting" while our love must rise toward a God hidden in a "cloud of unknowing". "With the cloud of unknowing above, between me and my God, and the cloud of forgetting below, between me and all creatures, I find myself in the silentium mysticum". William Johnston has taken the translation of A Cloud of Unknowing from a precious critical text and goes on to provide an introduction which includes discussion of the works and details of what is known about the history of the texts and the author in an effort to make the thoughts of the author available and intelligible to the modern reader. Also included is another work of the author entitled The Book of Privy Counseling which deals with the way to enlightenment through a total loss of self, and a Foreword by Huston Smith where he talks of the relevance of these works for contemporary readers.
