Jon M. Sweeney in his book When Saint Francis Saved the Church How a Converted Medieval Troubadour Created a Spiritual Vision for the Ages presents the reader with a different view of St. Francis than the what he calls the "too sweet" Francis of legend and unsubstantiated stories which were often told or written by others but not Francis himself. Sweeney says the real Francis was not to be found sitting in gardens with birds on his fingers, but he was "the first Christian who seemed to understand how intimately human beings are connected to all other creatures". So Sweeney looks at six areas where the life and message of Francis most "transformed the Christian message and resurrected the original spirit of Christianity".
These six areas are friendship, the other who were the marginalized people of his time, poverty, spirituality, care and death. Each chapter talks about how Francis forged a new spiritual path in those areas. Yet throughout his life, the author feels Francis stayed just an ordinary guy with doubts as to whether he was making the right decisions and doing the right things and this is one of the things that makes him so human and so popular.
