The Beatitudes found in the Christian Scriptures of the Bible are some of the most familiar words and lessons of Jesus. The book The Beatitudes Explained by author Silvia Vecchini helps explain these words and lessons in ways that are meaningful and understandable to children while encouraging them and giving them ways to live out the words. Each Beatitude is presented and then expanded upon with reflections, stories and additional scripture passages. Some have information on lives of certain saints that relate to the Beatitude while others have thoughts from popes and other spiritual leaders. Ways of living out the lesson being presented are given and a section called "Notebook" asks questions for children to ponder or activities for children to carry out which reflect the lesson presented in each Beatitude.
A section of The Beatitudes Explained has the main attribute from each Beatitude and then presents a saint who exemplifies that attitude. St. Bernadette is used as the example of one who is "pure of heart". Also included are six "beatitudes" introduced by Pope Francis in 2016 which address situations we face today. Illustrations included throughout the book help add meaning to the lessons being presented. The Beatitudes Explained would be a good resource book for use in a school or religious education class. Recommended for ages 8-12 years.
