The Miraculous Medal or Medal of the Immaculate Conception came about because of a vision St. Catherine Laboure received. In the vision she was given the image of Mary which is found on the medal as we have it today where she is standing on a globe with rays of grace pouring down from her hands. The back of the medal has a stylized large letter "M" and an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The number 1830 found on the bottom of the medal is the year in which St. Catherine received the vision.
This Miraculous medal, made of sterling silver, is oval shaped as seen in St. Catherine’s original vision and measures 3/4"H. It hangs on an 18” rhodium chain that has a clasp and making it the perfect size for women to wear. The Miraculous medal has a scalloped decorative edge and contains the words "Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse to thee" around the image. Although not an official practice, many Catholics believe wearing the Miraculous medal necklace brings special graces through the intercession of Mary at the time of death.
