Marco Bartoli's book, Saint Clare Beyond the Legend looks at the life of St. Clare through pulling information from The Legend of St. Clare the Virgin which was ordered written by the Pope on the occasion of her ordination and The Acts of the Process of the Canonization of Saint Clare which consists of eye witness testimony to her life and her own writings. He tries to bridge the gap between silence, the fact that she lived a life of silence in the monastery and that there are very few early writings about her life and memory where she is credited with preserving the memory of St. Francis and the Franciscan way of life.
Bartoli says Saint Clare is not so much about the Clare of history but the Clare as seen by her biographers. He delves into the relationship between Clare and Francis. He offers information about the Middle Ages and the culture in which Clare was living which helps the reader better understand Clare. He also discusses her ongoing struggle with the Pope to have her and her sisters' "Rule of Life" approved by the Pope which was realized on her deathbed. Author Ilia Delio, who also writes about St. Clare, says "Bartoli provides a fascinating and lucid account of one of the most remarkable women of the Middle Ages".
