The scapular medal replicates the cloth that the Benedictine order wore on their front and back shoulders representing the "yoke of Christ". Gradually, the pieces of cloth were reduced to what we are more familiar with today. Since 1910, however, the medal form of the scapular was approved and has been in use ever since.
