“The entire body of bishops felt the need to address the topic of racism, once again, after witnessing the deterioration of the public discourse, and episodes of violence and acrimony with racial and xenophobic overtones, that have re-emerged in America society in the last few years”.
This is one of the reasons stated for re-releasing Open Wide Our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love. In the booklet, the bishops honestly acknowledge that the Church as “aided and abetted racism over the centuries, particularly through silence which gave tacit approval to the practice”. The booklet provides a sketch of the history of racism as experienced particularly by Native Americans, African Americans and Hispanics/Latinos.
The bishops propose using Micah 6:8 as a starting point to help remedy this history. That is by doing justice, loving goodness and walking humbly with God. Doing justice by honestly assessing this reality, loving goodness by loving neighbors and walking humbly by trying to rebuild relationships. As they state, "we are all brothers and sisters equally made in the image of God. Because of this racism is above all a moral and theological problem that manifests institutionally and systematically. Only a deep individual conversion of heart, which then multiplies, will compel changes and reform inner institutions and society.”
