Elie Wiesel wrote the book Night to reveal the horror he and his family experienced during the Second World War when they, as a Jewish family, were sent to Auschwitz and then to Buchenwald. The book won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986. In 2006 his wife Marion translated anew his memoirs and testimony and in the process correcting details and giving a more accurate rendering of what happened to him and his family in the camps and his message that comes out of that experience that this must never be allowed to happen again.
Night deals with a painful and horrible subject and is painful and horrible to read. He says he does not know if he wrote it to help himself not go crazy or to leave a legacy and record so this would not happen again or to preserve a record of what he endured. He does know that having survived he had to give some meaning to his survival. Night includes a new preface by Wiesel explaining as best he can why he wrote the book and why this new edition has been published. The acceptance speech that he gave at the reception of his Nobel Prize is also included.
