Product Details
Icons are a unique type of art easily recognizable because of the style of the design. This card has the unique feature of a round rather than the traditional oval icon. It presents the tender image of Mary holding the baby Jesus. The card measures 4-3/8 by 5-7/8 inches and is blank inside so there is a generous amount of space to include your message for just about any occasion. The verse from Isaiah 7:14b is included on the inside. The back of the card has an explanation of the history and symbolism of the icon presented.
There are over 150 named images of Mary holding Jesus. Earliest versions were presented with no signs of human affection. In the 11th century images showing tenderness became popular and the image on this card comes from that genre. A unique feature of an icon is the large eyes of the figure which are said to be eyes that look into the soul of the viewer or that draw the viewer into communion with God through the eyes of the figure represented in the icon. The gold leaf used to adorn the halo reflects light differently than the rest of the surface of the card and is symbolic of the divine love of God for all people.
