Mindful Writing from the County Jail is a collection of over a hundred micro-short stories written by men and women being held in county jails. Edited and curated by Dennis Kelly, a mindful writing instructor and coach, the reader encounters writing of how racism, poverty, and privilege dictate life trajectories that become words of heartfelt and often tearful reflections of hope. In addition, Mindful Writing includes full color “in jail” photos and amazing illustrations from currently and formerly incarcerated artists. Measuring 6”W x9”H, Mindful Writing is a hardcover book that is appropriate not only for teens 12 – 18 years, but all adults as it allows the reader to become a compassionate witness into the lives of jailed individuals.
Mindful Writing doesn’t present despair and leave you there. You come away with an understanding of the background, humanity, and hope inherent in each story. The stories in Mindful Writing expose crime from the vantage point of those within our community who carry its burden. A burden born of extreme poverty, untreated addiction, mental illness, institutional discrimination, and limited educational opportunities. Voices from the Minnesota county jails in these stories speak to everyone including citizens concerned about public safety, victims who have been emotionally impacted, vulnerable high-risk young adults, and those in a position to fund therapeutic reform.
