Michael Ford in his book Lonely Mystic A New Portrait of Henri J.M. Nouwen expands on the idea that loneliness is the main theme running through the body of the work of Nouwen but points out that there has never been a book devoted to this major theme. Throughout his life Nouwen struggled with loneliness but by joining his spirituality with his psychological insights he "produced books that helped others live with loneliness in creative ways". In Lonely Mystic Ford "explores and analyzes Nouwen's writings on loneliness, intimacy and friendship in relation to his life". Nouwen himself is quoted as saying "When I embrace my loneliness, I find light, hope and joy."
Ford uses several resources for his book including unused interviews that were recorded for Nouwen's biography Wounded Prophet, reflections on loneliness from people Nouwen touched through his books and encounters with others suffering from loneliness and alienation, and material from an interview Nouwen gave Ford, his only one for BBC. The result is a "spirituality of loneliness for our times" taken from Nouwen's best writing on the subject and fresh insights into the "tortured brilliance" of Nouwen himself.
