Product Details
The Life of Saint Teresa of Avila by Herself was written by Saint Teresa herself and translated by J. M. Cohen. Born in the Castilian town of Avila in 1515, Teresa entered the Carmelite convent of the Incarnation when she was twenty-one years old. The Life of Saint Teresa of Avila by Herself is Spain’s most widely read prose classic after Don Quixote and is considered one of the great stories of a religious life and a literary masterpiece. In the beginning of her religious life, The Life of Saint Teresa of Avila by Herself shares how she was tormented by illness, doubts, and self-recrimination. Gradually, she came to recognize the power of prayer and contemplation, making her spiritual enlightenment more intensified by experiencing many visions and mystical events including the piercing of her heart by a spear of divine love.
The Life of Saint Teresa of Avila by Herself is a paperback with 320 pages and measures 5”W x 7.8”H. The translation by J. M. Cohen makes the words of this Spanish nun who was one of the great mystics and religious women of the Roman Catholic Church very accessible. Teresa always denied her own saintliness, however, saying in a letter, “There is no suggestion of that nonsense about my supposed sanctity.” Canonized in 1622, she was elevated to the Doctor of the Church by Pope Paul VI in 1970 and the first woman to be honored in this way.
