Thomas Merton was a Trappist monk, peace activist and author especially known for his book Seven Story Mountain, the autobiography of his life. In his classic book Live and Holiness he writes of the necessity of putting God in the center of life and thus what it means to be holy in face of the stress and anxieties faced in today's world. One thing he feels is necessary is leading an active life which involves " the participation of the Christian in the Church's mission on earth". This is not a busy activeness but action based on grace guided by the Holy Spirit. Merton talks about looking at and living ideals but these ideals are based on living a Christ centered life.
Life and Holiness is divided into five main sections and each section has several short essays. Because the essays are short Merton calls the book "an expository meditation" rather than a structured narrative. The end of the book has a study guide with passages from the book mentioned to be used for discussion and meditation. The book can be read on an individual level or would be useful for group participation.
