Product Details

The scapular was originally worn as a long, shoulder-length piece of material over their heads like an apron. However, it has evolved over time into a devotional article worn by many. Most scapulars are small in size, but this Saint Anthony Brief Scapular has larger panels measuring 3-1/8”W x 4-1/8”H along with a red cord that measures approximately 5-3/8 inches. This is an all wool scapular and is the perfect size for hanging on a wall or doorknob in your home or using on an altar. The Saint Anthony Brief depicts a Cross and words, “Behold the Cross of the Lord! Be gone Hostile Enemies! The Lion of Judah Offspring of David has triumphed! Alleluia!” and the Latin version of the same wording is on the other side of the cross.

The legend tells of a 13^th century woman living in Portugal experiencing a demonic oppression. The demonic voice told her to take her own life by drowning herself in the Tagus River. On the way to the river, she stopped to pray in a shrine erected to Saint Anthony of Padua. She fell asleep and saw St. Anthony standing and saying, “Arise woman, and take this paper, which will free you from the molestations of the Evil One.” Then he gave her a parchment that is now known as the “Brief” or letter of Saint Anthony. Indeed, upon awakening, she was freed from the demonic possession and desire to take her life. As news spread of this miracle, the King eventually asked her for the Brief. The King placed it with the Crown Jewels of Portugal but this allowed the demonic possession to return to the woman. Therefore, the King made a copy for her which restored her to health. The Saint Anthony Brief is still included in two Rituals of exorcism today used by the Roman Catholic Church.
