Icons are a unique type of art easily recognizable because of the style of the design. This card has an icon of the Holy Family and is unusual as it presents Joseph, who is usually observed in the background on most Holy Family icons, as a tender and protective figure with his arms around Mary and Jesus. The card measures 4-3/8 by 5-7/8 inches and is blank inside so there is a generous amount of space to include your message for just about any occasion. The verse from Luke 2:51a is included on the inside. The back of the card has an explanation of the history and symbolism of the icon presented.
The design is thought to be Russian. A unique feature of an icon is the large eyes of the figure which are said to be eyes that look into the soul of the viewer or that draw the viewer into communion with God through the eyes of the figure represented in the icon. This Holy Family icon reminds one of the importance of family in both human and divine existence. Notice the hands of Jesus, Mary and Joseph joined in love and unity. The gold leaf used on the halos reflects light differently than the rest of the surface and is symbolic of the divine love of God for all people.
