Faces of Easter Holtz, Albert

The title of his book, Faces of Easter Meeting the Pascal Mystery in the People Around Us, tells you exactly what Monk Albert Holtz, a Benedictine monk and author, is writing about. The book contains 50 reflections for Easter taken from his daily experiences and walks through the streets of Newark, New Jersey. From his encounters with street people to those with inner-city high school students, you are made familiar with how he thinks and feels, with what he has experienced and learned, as he says his prayers against a background of police sirens. The stories in Faces of Easter bring the abstract notion of the Easter or Pascal mystery to reality as Holtz interacts with the people around him and shares those experiences in the book.

Holtz lives in his monastery in Newark near an inner-city prep school. He takes long walks which makes him a familiar figure along the streets as he encounters those around him who open up the Easter mystery to him. He encourages others, especially in Faces of Easter, to see those around us not just in their suffering and loss but as shining a light on the spiritual connection between us all.
