Luca Della Robbia perfected the terracotta work of his time by adding colorful glazes to terracotta sculpture. The characteristic look of Della Robbia terracottas is white earthenware with a pale blue glaze. The19th-century writer Walter Pater spoke of them, “like fragments of the milky sky itself, fallen into the cool streets, and breaking into the darkened churches.” This Della Robbia Mary weeping crucifix adds an extra dimension to one’s devotional life.
