Even Henri Nouwen wrote a book on his experience contemplating Rembrandt’s The Prodigal Son after visiting it in the museum contemplating it for hours. In addition, art historians say that Rembrandt felt he was both sons, but the son who stayed home had the hardest conversion to go through. This is indicated by the standing son shown with his arms crossed in judgment. Mercy and forgiveness are at the height of the message of Christ.
