Measuring 4-1/2”W x 6”H, this St. Brendan icon features him holding a ship to honor this sixth-century abbot and his legendary travels by ship with his fellow monks to North America in an oxide boat 500 years before the Vikings. St. Brendan is designated as the patron saint of sailors, navigators, mariners, seafarers, the U.S. Navy, and yachtsmen due to his extraordinary missionary work by ships. In addition, he is the patron saint for those who are afraid. Born in Fenit, Ireland during 484 AD, St. Brendan became ordained a priest at the age of 26. He set sail with 12 companions to find the “land of the blessed” and found an island that cannot be accurately documented but may be part of the Faroe Islands. Brendan's most celebrated foundation was Clonfert Cathedral, in the year 563, over which he appointed Moinenn as Prior and Head Master. Brendan was interred in Clonfert in 577 AD.
Mounted on wood, the St. Brendan icon is made with a process called, “Lumina Gold” which creates rich colors because the print is on top of a gold leaf background.
