St. Leo the Great was in Pope Benedict XVI, “his papacy is undoubtedly one of the most important in the Church’s history.” Born in Tuscany, Italy, St. Leo the Great was a Roman aristocrat. During his papacy, he met Attila the Hun and persuaded him to not invade Italy. This St. Leo the Great pendant honors his legacy of being a “Doctor of the Church” alongside Gregory I. St. Leo’s definition of Christology as Christ’s being the hypostatic union of two natures, divine and human, united in one person, “with neither confusion nor division,”. He also contributed significantly developing ideas of papal authority and it is during his papacy that “pope” moved from meaning any Bishop of Rome to belonging exclusively to the Pope of St. Peter’s Basilica. St. Leo the Great is the first pope to be buried in St. Peter’s Basilica in 461 A.D. and his feast day is November 10. He is the patron saint of speakers.
