The four purple, faceted amethyst stones on this pectoral cross are striking against the gold vine-like scroll design. This artistry on the pectoral cross acknowledges the powerful imagery and symbolism of grapes and vineyards used throughout the bible. The pectoral cross measures 4 inches high x 2-1/2 inches wide x 1/8 inch deep and hangs on a 32 inch chain. Designed to be both distinguished and comfortable, the pectoral cross size and length of chain works well for most clergy who are required to wear them.
Although widespread use of wearing a pectoral cross in the western church did not begin until about the 14th century, Pope Hilarius is the earliest church official to mention one. Many designs for a pectoral cross are quite ornate, but this one is subtle with noble features that include the Staurogram in the center and the budded ends of the cross. The pectoral cross chain reflects light handsomely due to the hammered surfaces on each of the links.
