St. Timothy was a faithful companion of the Apostle Paul, accompanying him on several missions including those to the Corinthians and the Thessalonians. At Paul's request, Timothy journeyed to Ephesus to act as Paul's representative; he remained there for the rest of his life, eventually becoming the city's first bishop. He was martyred as a result of his opposition to the celebration of the feast of the goddess Diana.
St. Timothy is the patron of those who suffer from stomach ailments; due to his austere lifestyle, he developed infirmities which led St. Paul to recommend that Timothy 'no longer drink only water but take a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.' (1 Tim 5:23 NRSV). Most sources list his feast day as January 26; Butler's Lives of the Saints offers January 24. This St. Timothy medal is oval shaped, made of fine sterling silver, and has the image of St. Timothy skillfully embossed on the front of the medal along with the saint's name.
